Richard McGee is a Missouri-based author specializing in Ozarks and state history, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), historic mills, and regional heritage research. His work is based on field study and documentation across Missouri and Arkansas.

Located along tributaries of the White River in Ozark County, both communities were centered around water-powered gristmills known as Hammond Mill. Although they shared a name and similar beginnings, they followed different paths. One settlement, rose along the Big North Fork River, and gradually disappeared into the Ozark landscape. The other, on the Little North Fork River, developed into a thriving trade center before declining during the 1940s.

Drawing on historical newspapers, photographs, maps, and surviving landmarks, McGee reconstructs the histories of these communities while placing them within the broader story of frontier settlement, the Civil War, and the social and economic changes that shaped the Ozarks during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
